Simulating the creating process of artistic Easter eggs in 3ds Max and Substance Painter
FGT3D “Easter Egg” challenge was organized in March, sponsored by Texture Box and Fox Renderfarm.
Fox Renderfarm is so glad to have an interview with Surjendu Das again. Surjendu won the 1st place of the Challenge by The Art of Easter Eggs. Congrats!
The modeling, composition and color use received loads of compliments by the jury. What’s the story behind while creating this artwork? Let’s figure it out together!

- Caption: It has always been fun to explore our creative ideas, while we are at home. So I tried to portray the same idea through this artwork, where someone is being creative and painting the Easter Eggs in his own artistic styles while at home. And he is also feeling lucky to share his process with us.
Fox Renderfarm: How do you feel about winning the 1st place in the FGT3D “Easter Egg” Challenge?
Surjendu: I am really feeling motivated to win the 1st position in the FGT3D "Easter Egg" Challenge with my artwork. A big Thank You to Fox Renderfarm and Texture Box and to the judges who liked my artwork and selected me as the winner. This award encourages me to create better artworks in the future.
Fox Renderfarm: What’s the inspiration behind the award-winning work?
Surjendu: We all love to present gifts and easter eggs during Easter to our friends and relatives but the challenges we all are facing right now, are forcing us to maintain a social distance. So I thought why not make something that can be shown as how to stay creative and connected from home, even in these tough times. Hence, I made a scene where I show some easter eggs that are being prepared at home in a creative manner.
Fox Renderfarm: How long did it take to finish the artwork?
Surjendu: It took me about 1.5 months to complete the project.
Fox Renderfarm: What software and plugins did you use to finish the artwork?
Surjendu: I used 3ds Max 2019, Substance Painter, Vray Next and Photoshop to create my artwork
Fox Renderfarm: The modeling and composition of the artwork are so great. How did you make it? Any ideas behind that?
Surjendu: After making up a brief idea of what I would create, I started off by searching videos on the internet on how to prepare Easter Eggs as I did not make one by myself ever. After getting to know what props I need, I started to model those all in 3ds Max. Thanks to my friend Ritam Chatterjee who really helped me by modeling some of the assets in the scene. I also downloaded 1 or 2 free assets from Turbosquid suiting my needs, as I was reaching the deadline soon. I implemented real-life photography techniques in my art to set the camera angle and lighting. I textured the majority of the assets textured in Substance Painter whereas some of them were shaded in 3ds Max and Vray. And lastly, after the rendering job, I spent a good time on post-processing on Photoshop which even enhanced the look of my render. I spent time perfecting and tweaking things on every stage of production which resulted in this nice artwork.
Fox Renderfarm: The beautiful color use is perfect and well received by the judges. How did you design it? How did you balance all the colors in use?
Surjendu: Unfortunately, I never made Easter Eggs in real life. So I did a little research on them before texturing or placing the eggs. Apart from that, I used techniques of food photography to light up the scene and set the right color and brightness balance for my subject. Those principles helped to make the subject pop out as it would be in real life.
Fox Renderfarm: Technically and visually, which is your favorite part of this work? Why?
Surjendu: The texturing of the scene was my favorite part all over, this time. I really liked and enjoyed the way I was able to hand-paint textures on the eggs and create realistic materials on Vray and 3ds Max.
Fox Renderfarm: Have you met any difficulty in the creation? How did you overcome it?
Surjendu: I faced a lot of difficulties while creating this artwork but apart from everything the one which upset me the most initially, was choosing the best composition for the scene. So I did a crash course on food photography as I mentioned previously, and learned how to set the proper angle and composition for such scenes.
Fox Renderfarm: Any other things you wanna share with CG enthusiasts?
Surjendu: I just want everyone to stay safe and healthy and engage yourself in creating awesome stuff while you are at home :)
