    FGT3D “Easter Egg” challenge was organized in March, sponsored by Fox Renderfarm, the TPN-Accredited cloud render farm, and Texture Box.

    Fox Renderfarm is so glad to have an interview with Sai Dinesh Komanduri. Sai won the 2nd place of the Challenge by Easter Land. Congrats!

    Sai watches cartoons very much. The colors in those cartoons always pop and eye-catchy with an interesting subject. However, balancing the whole image with many colors was challenging for him in the whole artwork.

    Fox Renderfarm: How do you feel about winning the 2nd place in the FGT3D “Easter Egg” Challenge?

    Sai: Thank you FGT3D Jury for selecting me as the 2nd place winner for the challenge. I'm happy and honored for winning this challenge which I didn’t expect that I'll win. Second time in a row winning the challenge from FGT3D. Thank you FGT3D and Texture Box for the prizes awarded.

    Fox Renderfarm: What’s the inspiration behind the award-winning work?

    Sai: I watch cartoons very much. The colors in those cartoons always pop and eye-catchy with an interesting subject. And also Easter is about colors and mainly Eggs. So I took that as an inspiration and started working on the project.

    Fox Renderfarm: How long did it take to finish the artwork?

    Sai: It took me 10 days to finish the project including post-processing.

    Fox Renderfarm: What software and plugins did you use to finish the artwork?

    Sai: I used Blender 2.82a, Armor paint, Cycles render and Photoshop to create it.

    Fox Renderfarm: The modeling and composition of the Bunny house are so great. How did you make it? Any ideas behind that?

    Sai: Thank you so much for noticing it. Since the favorite food of bunny is Carrot, so I thought why not make a house for the bunny in the shape of a carrot and added the Bunny ears on the top so that it actually looks like a Bunny House which is made by them. I searched some images on the internet for reference and I got inspired from them. The usage of colors is pretty straight forward. The modeling of the house is pretty simple, started with a cylinder, did some vertices pulling and pushing and some punches to the faces.. hahaha. After that, I unwrapped the model and started texturing. I created the carrot texture procedurally in Blender with Nodes and I tried my best in recreating it in a cartoonish way.

    Fox Renderfarm: The beautiful color use of the eggs is perfect and well received by the judges. How did you design it? How did you balance all the colors in use?

    Sai: The main focus of the image are Eggs and those are my priority. I searched for reference for the Easter eggs on the internet and I have seen some fascinating images which have great color combinations. So I got inspired from those images and started working on the eggs. I actually started working with the eggs first and later built the whole scene around it. I chose colors from the reference images I have found and tried to balance them according to the Cartoonish look I’m aiming for. I have made some alpha maps in photoshop for the designs on the eggs and painted them. I created 8 egg designs and used node connections to give random colors to the eggs and randomizing the patterns to give variations.

    Fox Renderfarm: Technically and visually, which is your favorite part of this work? Why?

    Sai: I loved creating each and every element. Balancing the whole image with many colors was challenging for me in the whole artwork and that’s the best part. I guess that is what resulted in winning.

    Fox Renderfarm: Have you met any difficulty in the creation? How did you overcome it?

    Sai: When I first started creating the eggs and that’s what I have started with as I said earlier. It was fine and I thought it’s going smooth and I'll finish this artwork in 2 days or so. But when I started compositing the image, I can't even imagine the stress it took me to the image of what it is now. I have created many other assets for this artwork and removed them as the whole image is getting busy with a lot of elements, so I removed them and focused on the eggs and the house. The vast landscape and rendering the whole scene at one go was a pain. So I split the image into Foreground and Background and rendered it which actually gave me flexibility in Post-processing the image.

    Fox Renderfarm: Any other things you wanna share with CG enthusiasts?

    Sai: As I always believe and I follow that stay hungry for the Inspirations and let the creative juices flow through you. Keep working though you fail for the 10th or 100th time, you'll succeed one day. Believe in yourself and your artworks.
